Time gentlemen, please!

This was perhaps the first photographic project I undertook, way back in the early 1980s. I set out to capture a flavour of Glasgow's 'howffs' - traditional boozers that were a haunt of old men, often solitary except for the occasional dug. Women were rare, everyone smoked while they drank their beer and whisky chasers and the walls and ceilings were nicotine stained to a shade that never appeared in any designer's Pantone chart.

Sadly, many of the images I captured at the time were lost in transit during various house moves, continent moves, and life moves, not unlike many of the pubs themselves which have now been gentrified beyond recognition. These are all I have left.
