Sonder

This ongoing series takes its name and inspiration from an entry in The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows, John Koenig's compendium of invented words.

In it, 'sonder' is defined as 'the realization that each random passerby is living a life as vivid and complex as your own... with elaborate passageways to thousands of other lives you'll never know existed ... [and] in which you might only appear once in the background.'

Each photograph here captures fleeting moments whereby the observer is no longer the star of their own life story but has become a walk-on extra in someone else's.

'Photographs really are experience captured'
